What is the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM®) designation?

The Chartered Investment Manager (CIM®) designation is the industry educational standard for discretionary investment and portfolio management services. It is recognized by Canadian securities regulators as meeting the proficiency requirements for those applying for approval in a portfolio management registration category.  The regulatory bodies (CIRO and CSA) may have their own non-proficiency-related requirements to approve registration in this category.

When you earn the CIM®, you have demonstrated the knowledge and skills to manage money on a discretionary basis for an increasing number of sophisticated clients and are in a position to apply for a portfolio management category of regulatory registration.

What is the CIM® Competency Profile?

The CIM® Professional Competency Profile provides an overview of the responsibilities, skills, and knowledge unique to someone who holds the CIM® designation. It is the foundational document for the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM®) designation that describes the required competencies (i.e., the knowledge, skills and abilities) of professionals awarded the designation.

The Competency Profile is the defining resource for what a wealth manager can and should do in practice. It is used to set the requirements for the pre-requisite education programs, the work experience component, the CIM® Certification Examination and continuing education requirements.

As the CIM® designation continues to progress to meet clients’ changing needs, employers, and most recently, regulators, CSI revises the Competency Profile every 5 years through an extensive consultative process involving various stakeholders.
